Members may recall the appeal in recent years against the promotion of a member to the position of Assistant Chief Officer. That matter was heard in the SA Employment Tribunal with a judgement handed down by His Honour Judge Hannon.
In his decision, the learned judge drew attention to the tension between the provisions of SAMFS SAP 40 and the provisions of the Fire and Emergency Services Act in relation to appointments at this level of the SAMFS and made some recommendations for change.
The employer has now approached our union to propose an amendment to SAP 40 and this matter has been considered by the UFU State Council with the resolution that the proposal be supported in principle, subject to consultation with interested members and no unintended consequences.
The SAMFS Deputy Chief Officer Jeff Swann has agreed to attend a meeting at the UFUSA office to outline the proposed change, the reasons for it, and we invite questions and discussion.
