DROPPED! ALL CHARGES AGAINST UFU MEMBER ROY THOMPSON WITHDRAWN

UFU State Councillors were elated to welcome ACFO Roy Thompson to the union office today; instead of appearing before the SAMFS disciplinary committee previously scheduled to meet today to hear charges against him, Roy joined State Council at 148 South Rd, for a wholesome lunch, having been advised that all charges against him had been dropped and he is to be invited to return to his work.

After only 862 days…

We welcome the vindication of Roy in this matter and congratulate him on the exemplary way in which he has conducted himself throughout this long ordeal. A range of matters remain outstanding which will be pursued vigorously by our union and members can be assured they will be hearing much more about this in coming weeks. Meanwhile we encourage and hope that Roy will choose to return to his position with the MFS and we are confident of his warm welcome by all members of this union who value justice, integrity and respect.

RETAINED FIREFIGHTER RECRUITS TO RECEIVE PAID TRAINING

Retained recruit firefighters undertaking training with the MFS commencing this month will be paid for their attendance at the weekends of training for the first time.

Under the agreement struck during the last round of enterprise bargaining, the rate of pay will be the same as for full-time firefighter recruits. Each further retained recruit course will likewise be paid for attendance at training.

DAY WORKING COMMANDERS AND ACFOS

In a further step towards equity, those Day Working Commanders and Assistant Chief Fire Officers who are placed on an on-call roster and are required to attend approved out of scale events, will now receive overtime payments and on-call allowances for those events.

UFU AT VENTIA REVIEW DRAFT ENTERPRISE AGREEMENT PRIOR TO VOTE

UFU Shop Stewards representing members employed at VENTIA Edinburgh and Woomera meet with union staff next week to review the draft of the proposed enterprise agreement. Once the document is agreed between the union and the employer, it will be put to an electronic ballot to determine its acceptance by a majority of those covered by the EA.

PFAS – PER & POLYFLUOROALKYL SUBSTANCES

The UFU has been invited to include the following in Wordback for the information of members; thanks to the MFS Senior Scientific and Environment Officer Ms Krystle Mitchell for the following:

Former MFS Sites and History of Firefighting Foam Use

The MFS is currently investigating firefighting foam (containing PFAS) use at disposed MF S sites dating back to the 1970’s. A list of possible stations is on MFS Memo 52/2023 dated 18 July 2023. The MFS is looking for any current or former staff that may be able to give us a history of firefighting foam use at disposed MFS stations. If you have previously worked at a disposed site or know of someone who may be able to assist, please send the information through to mfs.pfas@eso.sa.gov.au.

Using Solberg Rehealing Foam in Training, Exercises and Flushing of Appliances

Solberg Rehealing firefighting foam (the current MFS Class B foam) is only allowed to be used in training and exercises (including core skills) in areas that meet EPA approval. This is not because Solberg contains PFAS(as it does not),it is because no foam is environmentally friendly and can cause environmental issues. Station environments, including paved and concreted areas are not allowed to be used for any foam training or to spray foam onto as EPA require no foam to enter stormwater systems.

Metropolitan and Regional stations have been asked (in MFS Memo 51/2023) to submit possible grassed or dirt locations suitable for training/spraying foam onto to the following email before 11 August 2023 – mfs.scientificofficer@eso.sa.gov.au. Each location cannot be used more than 4 times per year so it is recommended that stations submit at least 5 locations in their area (just in case any are not approved). These sites will be submitted to EPA for approval and all approved sites will be disseminated in a further memo to all staff. Staff will then be expected to organise any approval from the owner of the land to undertake foam training there.

Flushing of foam from appliances can only occur at approved locations. They must not be flushed onto impervious areas at stations and allowed to enter stormwater. The importance of identifying locations for approval will ensure that you have an area available to undertake flushing of the appliance.
EPA are currently reviewing the criteria for use of the current MFS High Expansion and Class A foam products.
