ENTERPRISE AGREEMENT SAFETY AND RESOURCING CAMPAIGN

WordBack EA - Safety And Resourcing Campaign

The meeting of UFU Shop Stewards and State Councillors held last week was very well attended and we thank our elected representatives for the job they do in the interests of firefighters, very often in their own time and often wrestling with prickly issues.

The meeting received a report on the EA Safety and Resourcing Campaign and endorsed plans for the escalation of the campaign. For obvious reasons those plans will not be set out in Wordback however please do not hesitate to discuss this matter with your Shop Steward or State Councillor or to request a Station meeting. And please remember that the AGM is scheduled for Thursday, 9 December 2021 at the union office where a full report will be provided to the membership followed by a delicious rotisserie lunch in great company. Please RSVP now!

AMBOS PETITION DELIVERED

A huge thank you to members who turned out last week to support our ambos as they delivered their petition to the SA Parliament. The petition was signed by more than 40,000 South Australians and calls upon the Marshall government to resource health and in particular to stop ramping. The AEA thanked us for our ongoing support as we stand together in Unity to continue to fight for proper resourcing in emergency services in our state. Are you listening Mr Marshall?

COVID UPDATE

The UFU was advised on 15/11 by the MFS of their intention to issue SAMFS Memorandum 81 on 16/11, seeking that members voluntarily provide a copy of your COVID vaccination certificates to the employer by way of email.

This timeframe provided insufficient time for us to effectively consult and in addition concern has been expressed regarding the level of confidentiality which the MFS is able to guarantee, and about the possible future use of such private health information. Accordingly, the MFS request was not endorsed by the union and members are urged to exercise caution, noting that it is not possible to “unscramble an egg”.

On a positive note, it is heartening that the MFS have been seeking to be proactive in terms of putting plans in place for the opening of the SA borders today. Information has been sought however in relation to the plans for Regional Operations and no doubt that information will be forthcoming soon.

SENIOR FIREFIGHTER QUALIFIED LEVEL II

The SA Employment Tribunal requires confidentiality of the details of these proceedings however we can report that the recommendations made by the employer have been accepted by both the employer and the union and are currently being implemented.

A further meeting is being held this afternoon between the parties to continue to seek resolution to the dispute.

WORK HEALTH AND SAFETY REPRESENTATIVES (WHSR) TRAINING

The WHSR Level I training course conducted 25 – 29 October 2021 was rated highly by participants with feedback indicating a high level of satisfaction that the training provided WHSRs with the necessary knowledge and skills to perform the role required. Thank you to all those involved, and we look forward to working hard with you to ensure the primacy of the health and safety of all MFS employees. A level II course is planned for early 2022.
