FIRIES ONCE AGAIN MAKE MOTHERS DAY CLASSIC A ROARING SUCCESS!

Our union in cooperation with the SA Metropolitan Fire Service once again ensured that the Mother’s Day Classic was a roaring success. Held early last Sunday morning, the MDC represents a cause close to the hearts of firefighters and our families, raising awareness of breast and ovarian cancers as well as funds for research to combat them.

Firefighters are very conscious of the impact of cancer given the high rates affecting our members, four times more than the average due to exposure to carcinogens at work. That is why we are working so hard to extend the range of cancers where the presumptive provisions apply for when the worst happens to a firefighter, and we have called on the Malinauskas government to show genuine care for those who risk so much to protect our community.

Warmest thanks and a shout out to all who have been involved in the successful organisation and running of the Mother’s Day Classic 2024. From all who set up our site to those members and families and friends who joined the team and participated by walking/running, or by cooking and serving up the delicious brekkie, our D and B shift members who so willingly set up, then on the day assisted and to all who stayed on to load up and decamp, you are absolute legends, thank you. As to the spirit on the day, the photos of so many happy gorgeous people says it all!

REVIEW OF REGIONAL OPERATIONS

I am pleased to advise that the review of Regional Operations agreed between our union and the SAMFS under the current enterprise agreement is now to proceed and will commence in late May 2024.

SAMFS Chief Officer Jeff Swann has appointed former Tasmanian Fire and Rescue Service Chief Officer Dermot Barry who has also prior service both the MFS and CFS, to conduct the review.

It is agreed that this review presents an opportunity to review matters such as:

  • Model of retained and full time in Mount Gambier and Port Pirie
  • Attraction and retention challenges in the regions
  • Retained model (Including the response measures and attendance percentages)
  • Leadership and behavioural requirements for Retained Stations
  • Process and systems for response in Retained Stations
  • Future growth for stations and staffing models such at Mt Barker, Whyalla and Mount Gambier
  • The Agreement (Part C – Retained Firefighters)
  • Process for managing Retained Stations going offline.

The Chief Officer was welcomed to our State Council meeting today and addressed a range of issues including the Regional Review which he said will be broad ranging and will identify areas for improvement, to make recommendations for further consideration and consultation with the broader MFS and potential considerations as part of the enterprise agreement negotiations.

The review will encompass a survey of all staff, station visits, meetings, engagement with the UFU, and an assessment of approach undertaken by other fire services within Australia, with the objective of a report being provided to the Chief Officer and Executive Director in August 2024.

Members are encouraged to engage strongly with the review as this potentially provides an opportunity for positive change. You can contact UFU Industrial Officer/Retained Firefighter Rachel Eisen on 8352 7211 with any queries.

VENTIA ENTERPRISE AGREEMENT CERTIFIED

UFU members employed by Ventia at Edinburgh and Woomera will be pleased to know that the new enterprise agreement has now been certified by the Fair Work Commission and has come into force. It is anticipated that the backpay for the first wage increase will be paid by the employer very shortly.

MFS SAP36 REPLACEMENT

Thank you to all members who have provided feedback in relation to the draft document replacing SAP 36; these are currently being compiled into a response to present to the SAMFS for consideration. Chief Officer Jeff Swann has advised that all feedback will be considered, and a new draft will be developed for further consultation on this important body of work.

In solidarity
