Industrial actions unanimously endorsed by State Council last week escalate at 0800 hours today Monday 18 October 2021, with members gadded to act up, returning to their substantive positions.

The bans arise from the employer’s breachof the Enterprise Agreement by using act upsand GADs to avoid promotions, themanipulation of the promotions process anddemoting members from the rank of SFFQwithout a proper process.

The decision to institute this industrial action was not taken lightly by State Council, however we are unanimous in determining that the employer’s actions require a strong and unequivocal response from us all, within the bounds of actions available to us as emergency services workers.

If left unchallenged, the precedent of demotion without proper process would be available to the employer in the future to deal such treatment out to all ranks e.g., enhanced skills development and training is introduced for a rank, the employer makes it mandatory and if you don’t pass, you’re demoted.

Our union has consistently argued for increased training and competency and we will continue to do so. However best practice in training (as espoused by the MFS itself) is to provide expeditious feedback to participants on any shortfall and to work with them providing a pathway to develop in that area – entirely missing in this instance.

The employer is prohibited from discriminating against any employee for participating in the UFUSA’s current industrial action. This means if your chain of command requires you to do something that has been banned or limited by the UFUSA or penalises you in some other wayin the carrying out of your duties, the MFS may be liable for a fine of up to $20,000. Pleasea dvise immediately should this occur.

Industrial Actions which commenced at 0800hrs on Friday 15 October 2021:

  • All Operational Act Ups are banned
  • Passive work routine to be adopted (Booster Tests and Community EducationPrograms to continue).
  • No Charging for AIRS Reporting to be adopted (all other call details to be included).

From 0800hrs today, Monday 18 October 2021 existing GADs will also cease.
