Anzac Day 2024

INTERNATIONAL WORKERS MEMORIAL DAY

As we remember our Anzacs, it is important days later, that we also remember our former work comrades who are no longer with us, through having contracted for example an industrial disease such as brain cancer, mesothelioma, multiple myeloma, prostate cancer etc through exposure to the many carcinogens involved in firefighting.

International Workers Memorial Day is an important day for unions and workers to commemorate those who have lost their lives as the result of work, and to commit to do everything in our power to make sure no one living joins them.

The day has a unique significance for Firefighters who face lethal risk in your employment and through the long-term consequences of firefighting, and who are also first responders in the event of industrial accidents.

Although the day itself falls upon 28 April, as that is a Sunday this year there will be events held on the morning of Monday 29 April 2024 hosted by unions and victims of industrial death groups.

If you are available, we invite you to join us and other UFU members at 9am Monday 29th April at Parliament House, where we will hear short speeches commemorating the day, before unions will join together to march to the Pilgrim Uniting Church for the annual memorial service.

This, and every year, we commit to remember the dead, and to fight for the living.

MARKING THE TRAGIC LOSS OF THREE FIREFIGHTERS IN CITY OF SINGAPORE FIRE

As previously reported, this Friday, 26 April 2024 marks 100 years since the loss of the lives of three firefighters in the fire and explosion on the City of Singapore, moored at what is now known as Tragedy Wharf at Dock 2 in Port Adelaide.

A ceremony is being held at the site at 11:00 hours this FRIDAY 26/4, with a display of photos and artefacts and a memorial plaque to be unveiled by our new Minister Dan Cregan.

The occasion is being marked with the attendance of the Gallantry, the Archie Badenoch, tugboats and MFS appliances followed by morning tea in Shed 13. You may be aware that the Clipper Ship City of Adelaide is located at Dock Two and will be open for tours after the event, the Nelcebee and the bow of the Fire Queen are also on display in the precinct, so it’s a good opportunity to come along, bring the family see the displays and get immersed in our very special marine history.

The public are invited, and members are especially encouraged to come along with family and friends, to learn more about our history and to pay our respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

UFUSA ELECTIONS
