International Firefighters’ Day (IFD) is observed on May 4 every year to recognise the sacrifices and bravery of firefighters around the world. The day is celebrated to honour fallen firefighters, recognise the courage and dedication of firefighters, and to raise awareness about fire safety and prevention. Thank you all for your service in keeping our community safe.

Please come along and demonstrate your support for presumptive cancer provisions for firefighters.

MayDay 2024

Very best May Day wishes to all UFU members; and a reminder that we will be celebrating International Workers Day today, Saturday 4 May with a March and Family Fun Day, commencing at Elder Park at 11:00 hours. Our appliances will be out at the rally educating the public and dazzling the kids with what firefighters do. But there is another important message to be reinforcing as well.

Members are urged to attend to show a strong presence as we hopefully near resolution of the extended presumptive cancer provisions for firefighters. While not a formal part of proceedings, it is extremely helpful for the government to see us show up in numbers, wearing union T-shirts to demonstrate our commitment to this very important cause. We do everything we can to prevent firefighters contracting cancer from our work however more protection is needed for those who find themselves in the worst case scenarios with life-threatening diseases caused by firefighting.

As you know we have presumptive coverage for primary site brain cancer, primary site bladder cancer, primary site kidney cancer, primary non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, primary leukaemia, primary site breast cancer, primary site testicular cancer, multiple myeloma, primary site prostate cancer, primary site ureter cancer, primary site colorectal cancer, and primary site oesophageal cancer.

Additional cancers which we seek to be covered are asbestos-related diseases, primary site liver cancer, primary site lung cancer, primary site cervical cancer, primary site ovarian cancer, primary site pancreatic cancer, primary site penile cancer, primary site thyroid cancer, malignant mesothelioma and skin cancer. Please come and join us and demonstrate your support for this claim.

VENTIA UPDATE: The application documents for the Ventia Enterprise Agreement (EA) to be certified have now been filed with the Fair Work Commission and it is anticipated that the matter will be heard and determined in the near future. Members will be kept informed.

ELECTIONS: An electronic ballot will soon be held for places on the UFUSA Inc State Council including for President, Committee Members/Officers and Committee Members/Firefighters. All financial members have received information about the candidates (where they have provided a bio) from the Returning Officer and you will be provided with the ability to vote electronically for your choices in the near future.

Meanwhile in a separate election, some members are currently receiving a hard copy ballot paper in their post for an election of a President in the SA branch of the UFUA. Less than half of our UFUSA Inc members have maintained membership in the national union therefore a majority are not on the roll and will not be involved in this ballot.

All eligible members are urged to participate in the perspective ballot processes. If you’re unsure about your situation, please feel free to contact the UFUSA Returning Officer Paul Caica about UFUSA State Council elections or the Australian Electoral Commission about the national union election.

HAVE YOU CHECKED YOUR PAY RECENTLY? Members have raised further discrepancies in pays highlighting the need to not only check your pay but to print off a hard copy of your payslip as you receive it.

As previously reported the MFS recently put the draft of the replacement for SAP36 out for consultation with a copy being placed on the MFS Members Only Website. Currently our union is reviewing the draft and collating responses from members in preparation for a submission to be considered by State Council at its next meeting on 16 May 2024. It would be appreciated if you have any feedback in relation to the draft if you would forward it to marked SAP36 Feedback. Thank you to those who have already responded, closing date is 10 May 2024.
