Mothers Day Classic 2024

Why should we participate in the MDC?

As Firefighters we are shockingly far too familiar with the scourge of cancer; advocating for members and retired members with industrial cancer claims sadly forms a significant part of our Union’s work.

With so many of our firefighting family affected, the Mother’s Day Classic (MDC) offers UFU members an opportunity to come together to take positive action against one of the cancers recognised under the Firefighting Presumptive provisions of Schedule 3 of the Return to Work Act 2014. Together with your family, friends and workmates, by participating in the MDC, you can help raise important awareness and critical funds while paying tribute to those battling breast cancer.

The second most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia, breast cancer impacts on 1 in 7 women and the incidence of breast cancer in men is also on the rise with 1 in 600 men diagnosed in their lifetime, with a higher incidence found among firefighters. We all know someone who has been affected in some way.

Our Union has a wonderful history of participation in this event. We also partner with the MFS to assist the organisers with logistics, people power and promotion. After several years of Covid-affected events, this year we are aiming to return to a large presence and to field a huge team. This event has always been a wonderful way of showcasing the commitment to community demonstrated by firefighters every day, both on and off the job.

Sunday 12th May 2024 (Mother’s Day!!!) The event starts early, leaving plenty of time to spend the rest of the day spoiling the Mums in your life.

Run or Walk, 4km or 7km from Pinky Flat (adjacent Adelaide Oval). The course is also pram friendly! Pre/Post run/walk enjoy the fresh fruit and BBQ breakfast with your family – look for the UFU shade tents set up at the finish line.

The event will take place on a “B-Shift” day this year, if crews are interested in participating, please make this request through your Southern Metropolitan Commander.
