RECRUIT SQUAD 61 GRADUATION

One of the most enjoyable things I get to do in my work as Secretary, is to visit APTC to speak to successive recruit squads about our union.

On Wednesday it was such a pleasure to meet our newest members in Recruit Squad 61, (other than former Regional Ops firefighter Brad, and Jason, previously an Engineering Department diesel mechanic, who of course were both already members of the UFU) of Recruit Squad 61.

And the Graduation Ceremony today, with such happiness on the faces of our members and families was again very moving – congratulations to you all for successfully completing your recruit squad and taking up your roles as MFS firefighters and joining us as UFU members. You certainly do credit to your new Union T-shirts!

VENTIA EB UPDATE

Members employed by Ventia have been very patient awaiting approval from the employer for the new EB draft in order that it can go to a ballot of members. With the operative date for the first pay increase looming, there has been considerable concern about progressing this matter. Your UFU representatives have been very diligent about pursuing this matter.

This week we had discussions with management about the reasons for the delay and are as satisfied as we can be that this relates to company registration matters. As a show of good faith the company has now provided an undertaking in writing that the pay increase and date of operation will be preserved and backpay will be paid when the agreement is certified.

PINK AND BLUE SWIM ON TOMORROW SATURDAY, 10 FEBRUARY 2024 WEST BEACH

Pink And Blue Swim 2024

The West Beach SLSC Pink and Blue swim is a fundraiser with 100% of all proceeds going towards Breast and Prostate Cancer research. This initiative has to date raised over $500,000 for a cause close to the hearts of firefighters with many members participating in it, both swimming and running.

Every year, our members, families, friends and the community are directly affected by these cancers, so we believe it is very important to raise both awareness and funds for ongoing critical research.

This initiative has been supported by the UFU and the MFS for several years, with the response from organisers and participants overwhelmingly positive; we anticipate that a CAPA and the Gallantry (see in background of photo) will be present, and the event will include a 200m, 500m, and a 1000m swim together with a 2km walk and a 6km run.

It’s forecast to be a glorious beach day and Members are urged to get down to West Beach from 10:00 hours tomorrow as a show of strength and to support your mates doing good things.

MFS SECONDARY EMPLOYMENT CONSULTATION PERIOD EXTENDED

A/Chief Officer Jeff Swann has agreed to extend the consultation period for submissions and feedback on the MFS draft SAP relating to Secondary Employment to Friday 15 March 2024.

Thank you to those who have taken the trouble to make submissions to both the MFS and through to our union. The UFU submission will be made to the MFS following consideration by State Council at our next meeting on 14 March 2024 and members are welcome to attend by RSVP to the union office.

You are encouraged to raise your concerns directly with the MFS however we understand that some members may prefer to direct comments and feedback through your union for reasons such as confidentiality and if so, you can email your concerns and views to info@ufusa.com.au and please mark it “Secondary Employment”. It would be appreciated if you would do this ASAP.

ELECTRONIC UFUSA ELECTIONS IN 2024 – ARE YOUR CONTACT DETAILS UP TO DATE?

As members are aware, elections will be held in the near future, so this is a reminder of the importance of your personal details being up to date in our UFUSA records. This will ensure the electoral roll is correct and that you will receive your ballot immediately when the time comes. This is particularly important following the unanimous resolution of the AGM to move to an electronic ballot for the UFUSA elections so if you have recently changed your home or personal email address, or your home or mobile phone number please let us know ASAP by calling us on 8352 7211, emailing info@ufusa.com.au or click the button below.

MEMBERSHIP COMMUNICATIONS – WORDBACK EMAIL DISTRIBUTION

Unfortunately, some of the recent Wordback emails sent to UFU members at your eso.sa.gov.au addresses have been rejected by the MFS/ESO server. Unfortunately, the UFU has no control over this action, so we have found it necessary to find alternate ways to communicate Wordback with you.

In the first instance, we have undertaken to send all individual members an SMS to your personal phones with a link to the latest Wordback (SMS messages can currently only be sent during office hours however I can continue to distribute at all hours via email to those who can receive it).

Whilst this is a noticeable change in our communication with you, we genuinely appreciate your support and patience whilst we transition to alternate communication systems.

We have also changed our email distribution listings to reflect your personal email address rather than your work email but there are a number of members’ personal addresses which are not currently listed with our office.

Given the recent difficulties encountered with the ESO server, we are seeking your support to update your personal email addresses and contact details with us to ensure that we can continue to provide you with the latest up to date information about your workplace and union activities in a timely way.

A Membership Update page is being developed on our website which we hope will provide you with a straightforward way of updating your contact details. Please click on the link to update. https://www.ufusa.com.au/ufusa-membership-update/

In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact us at the UFU office on 83527211 if you wish to update your details by phone or discuss your communication preferences.

Thank you again for your patience and support.

In solidarity
