It is with great sadness that we advise members of the recent death of UFU member Travis Hirschausen who worked as a firefighter for Ventia at Woomera.

Previously employed by the MFS as a Retained Firefighter at Port Pirie Station, Travis also took on the position of EB representative for members at Woomera Station in 2016 negotiations with the employer.

Our sincere condolences are extended to Travis’ wife Billie and sons Hunter and Bodhi and our thoughts are with them and with our members of the crew called to assist on the tragic night.

The funeral is being held this Friday, 21 June 2024 out 12:45 hours at Centennial Park, Florey Chapel with a gathering afterwards at the Flagstaff Hotel.

Vale Travis Hirschausen

The UFU is proud that our members at the Kadina station recently determined to depart from the normal audit process to take action to make sure that the MFS heard their concerns about the appalling state of their station.

From rising salt damp to no functioning shower, broken equipment, a complete absence of women’s facilities, a lack of clarity, continuity, and succession planning around appointments, and even a cracked toilet seat, we are appalled by the conditions in which our members are being expected to work, conditions which quite obviously fall short of the MFS’s duty of care.

We are further concerned by the disrespect shown to members who are not provided with medals that they have earned, for years after they were due.

Industrial Officer Rachel Eisen and Legal Officer Peter Russell were hosted by the Kadina members as they took their action, and proud to support them in that action; the UFU will stand with them in their ongoing fight to be treated with respect in their conditions of work. We also encourage other stations who are fed up with their conditions to contact us if they believe it’s appropriate to take collective action to send a message to the MFS.

Congratulations also to the Kadina station on becoming 100% union. There is strength in numbers, and you have used yours to send a strong message.

The survey of members for the next log of claims is currently being compiled and will be out to you individually shortly. Meanwhile if there are matters that you feel strongly about which you believe should be included please do send us an email to

In solidarity
